Fun project for a client who was throwing a surprise 50th birthday party for her husband. The theme was "The Sixties and Seventies," with the focus being on the fact that the guest of honor was born in 1969. All the guests were asked to dress in groovy attire. The client sent me screenshots of inspiration and quotes she found on Pinterest and elsewhere related to turning 50 and about life in 1969 that she wanted me to incorporate into the tabletop insert designs. She also asked me to write and design an "Ad Lib" game for the guests to play. I researched and found some "Guest Lib" material that I incorporated into a custom form design. I crafted the caricature, invitation, table toppers, and guest lib collateral.
I had a great time recreating the guest of honor into a cartoon "groovy dude!" I purchased a vector art file of a hippie giving the "peace" sign from "cthoman" on Can Stock that I used as a guide to help get the hand, arm, and shirt proportions accurate. I then created the head and face and sunglasses with the pen tool in Adobe Illustrator. I purchased the tie dye pattern for the headband and t-shirt from Adobe Stock and placed it into the Illustrator file using clipping paths. The background psychedelic swirl pattern is also a vector file I purchased from Adobe Stock. I used Adobe Illustrator to lay out the design. I used an 80% opacity on the white screen and the Typeface is PiePie. I had the invitations printed at a vendor on a heavyweight postcard stock, matte, one sided, trimmed size 7"w x 5"h.
I took the inspirational posts from the client and created the ideas with my own twist, using the swirl pattern from the invitation and the screen and caricature placement to create a "series" of table top inserts. Each insert has it's own "theme," yet, has similar design elements from each other to keep it cohesive. Typefaces and graphic elements were of my own choosing and creation. There were 11 table top designs in total. I printed them double-sided on my Epson graphic arts printer on 8.5" x 11" 110# card stock.
I created a guest lib of my own design, using the wording from one of the client's inspiration pieces. The guest libs are printed double-sided, with the space to share a memory on one side and the story with inserts for nouns, etc., on the other side. I printed roughly 100 of these on my Epson graphic arts printer on 8.5" x 11" 110# card stock, double-sided.
